Indian Ocean is one of India’s most iconic fusion-rock bands, formed in New Delhi in 1990 by guitarist Susmit Sen and percussionist Asheem Chakravarty. Known for blending Indian classical, folk, jazz, and rock elements, the band quickly carved out a unique identity in the country’s independent music scene. Their self-titled debut album in 1993 was followed by Desert Rain (1997), India’s first live album, and the critically acclaimed Kandisa (2000), which earned them cult status. Over the years, the lineup evolved to include Amit Kilam (drums), Rahul Ram (bass and vocals), Himanshu Joshi (vocals), Nikhil Rao (guitar), and Tuheen Chakravorty (tabla and percussion). Indian Ocean has also contributed to film soundtracks, most notably the acclaimed score for the movie Black Friday (2005). With their socially conscious lyrics and immersive live performances, Indian Ocean has toured extensively around the world and remains a cornerstone of India’s independent music landscape.
