Sujatha Mohan, born on 31 March 1963 in Kerala, is a legendary playback singer revered across South Indian cinema. Often called the “Melody Queen of South India,” she began her career as a child prodigy—performing on stage alongside K. J. Yesudas and recording her first song while in sixth grade. After a brief hiatus in the early 1980s, she made a powerful comeback in the late 1980s and rose to nationwide fame with hits in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films. She achieved her breakthrough in Tamil cinema with a song in the landmark film Roja (1992), often regarded as one of the defining voices of A. R. Rahman’s early era. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, she has sung thousands of songs, won multiple state awards—including Kerala and Tamil Nadu State Film Awards—and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award for her unparalleled contribution to music
