Tasneem is a non-binary, queer Indo–East African musician, songwriter, and multidisciplinary artist of Canadian–American nationality, now based between North America and India. Raised in Oklahoma by immigrant parents of Kenyan–Ugandan descent, they grew up listening to a mix of Whitney Houston, Sade, Afropop, and British soul, and began playing saxophone and singing in their youth. Their early career included fronting the rock band JUNGLI at venues like Carnegie Hall, and performing as a guitarist and backing vocalist for Kelis on Saturday Night Live. Musically, Tasneem blends folk‑rock, jazz, and soul with socially conscious themes around gender, identity, longing, and Muslim heritage. Their independent releases include the EP Just Before the World Ends (2019) and singles like “All Your Cousins,” “Goth Angeles,” and “Hiding in the Woods”, which have featured on curated playlists and gained critical notice. Beyond music, Tasneem works actively in filmmaking, writing, and mentoring young artists—especially women and non-binary creators—bringing an intersectional, activist voice through art.
